The fine comes weeks after Inc. was hit with a record 746 million-euro penalty in Luxembourg, where it has its European base, for processing personal data in violation of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. The Irish Data Protection Commission - Silicon Valley’s main privacy watchdog in Europe - said it found violations in the way WhatsApp explained how it processed users’ and non-users’ data, as well as how data was shared between WhatsApp and other Facebook companies. “And you can still count on absolutely no ads interrupting your communication,” he said.Facebook Inc.’s WhatsApp was ordered to pay a 225 million-euro ($266 million) penalty for failing to be transparent about how it handled personal information, its first fine under beefed-up European Union data protection law. “You can continue to use WhatsApp no matter where in the world you are, or what smartphone you’re using,” Koum wrote in a post on WhatsApp’s official company blog. Koum, for his part, has said that nothing will change for WhatsApp users as a result of the new acquisition. In remarks Wednesday, Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg made it clear that the company has no plans to put ads in WhatsApp, saying they are not the “right way to monetize messaging.” But the company has said that it does not c ollect users’ personal information and knows only users’ phone numbers and those of their contacts.įor those who may worry that WhatsApp’s focus on privacy will fall by the wayside now that it has been snapped into the Facebook ecosystem, both companies have been clear that little about WhatsApp is set to change - at least for the foreseeable future. Those downloading WhatsApp do grant the program a number of permissions for their phones, including the ability to read their contact lists, read phone status and identity and look at their location information. “Jan’s childhood made him appreciate communication that was not bugged or taped.” “It’s a decidedly contrarian approach shaped by Jan’s experience growing up in a communist country with a secret police,” Goetz wrote on Sequoia ’s Tumblr page. In building the app, Koum focused heavily on making sure that it was secure and did not collect too much personal information. When Koum came to the United States as a 16-year-old, he was living on food stamps and looking for an easy way to communicate with his family back home, according to Jim Goetz, a venture capitalist at Sequoia Capital, a firm that invested in WhatsApp. Those close to him attribute that focus to his upbringing in Ukraine and fears about something many Americans may now worry about: government surveillance. Maintaining the same privacy and security standards in WhatsApp is clearly an important point for Koum. Facebook is sometimes thought to have overstepped users’ expectations - and sometimes even government guidelines - on both points. WhatsApp is known for placing a strong focus on privacy, and co-founder Jan Koum has been vehement about his opposition to advertising in the product. WhatsApp’s multibillion-dollar acquisition by Facebook has turned more than a few heads - and not just with the steep price tag.

And in this case, it has been a huge ordeal since I rarely do any writing on my iPhone. But I recently switched my writing flow due to SearchLink. I thought I had something great in Ulysses. To set it up in Fantastical, go to the settings, scroll down near the bottom under Advanced and you'll see the setting for updating TextExpander snippets. And one of the features I have sorely missed on my phone is this TextExpander integration. But I have used Fantastical regularly over the years. ![]() In recent weeks I find myself using Bus圜al on both my Mac and iPhone. Again, you can enable the integration and refresh the snippets from the same place. To set this up, go to the settings within OmniFocus and scroll down to TextExpander. I have a snippet group in TextExpander dedicated to OmniFocus to make it quicker to enter task titles and dates. I can't make this list without mentioning OmniFocus. From there you can enable TextExpander and refresh the snippets regularly (more on that later). Scroll down and under Extensions you'll find TextExpander. You can use this in the settings for Drafts. It means I don't have to use the third-party keyboard to use my snippets on iOS. And that's why I was thrilled to discover a bunch of apps that have an integration with TextExpander. ![]() The more tools I can integrate with it, the better. So it's no secret that I look for ways to use TextExpander as much as I can. The snippets I'm using often save me from switching back and forth between applications or hunting down information. And although that sounds impressive, I'm guessing the real number is closer to double that number. And given the complexity of those snippets, it has saved me over two hours worth of typing in that same period. In the last month, I have expanded a little over 1,000 snippets in TextExpander. ![]() The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous outlines a three-part inventory covering resentment, fear and sex. Whatever answers came were then tested against the Four Absolutes–for the right answer was always as honest, pure, unselfish and loving as possible. When faced with any decision, they prayed and asked to be shown the right answer. This guidance served in place of selfishness and self-will as the driving force in a member’s life.Īs Oxford Group members turned to God rather than to themselves for direction, their decision-making process became central to their relationship with God. In Oxford Group belief, God provided guidance to the fully surrendered soul. After writing the Absolutes, members turned their lives over to the care of Jesus Christ. The Four Absolutes helped them to expose the fact that their way of living was not working. They were broken people in need of a savior. ![]() Oxford Group members discovered themselves to be sinners they were dishonest, impure, selfish and unloving. Writing the Four Absolutes brought about a sense of conviction. The Four Absolutes were meant as a guide to help members discover their sin, which in Oxford Group understanding meant anything that kept the soul separated from God. Group members then examined their own lives against the example of Christ and wrote down, to the best of their ability, all the ways in which they were deficient. ![]() When writing the Four Absolutes, Oxford group members often folded a piece of paper into quarters and then wrote one Absolute at the top of each section. Oxford Group members believed that these four qualities were perfectly expressed in the life of Jesus, and so they represent an ideal for human conduct. The Absolutes are Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness and Love. The Four Absolutes are a tool that was used by the Oxford Group, an evangelistic ministry that described itself as “a First Century Christian Fellowship.” Because the Twelve Steps were derived from the practices of the Oxford Group, we find the roots of moral inventory in the Four Absolutes. Although these are not the only styles of inventory available, these four will give us some insight into various trends at work in the recovery culture, and some understanding of how we can get started. This article examines four styles of moral inventory: the Four Absolutes, the inventory based on the Big Book, the inventory presented in Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, and the inventory presented in a Step 4 guide published by Hazelden. If we know the basic assumptions of a particular style of inventory, we have a better idea about whether it is a good match for us. If we write according to the first style of inventory, we are more likely to enter into an intimate relationship with God, whereas if we write according to the second style, our relationship with God might become more cooperative.īecause moral inventory affects how we understand ourselves in relation to God, it might be helpful to look at what the various styles of inventory are and how they operate. Other styles of inventory encourage us to look not just at our shortcomings but at our strengths as well, and so the sense of need for God is not as strong. Some styles of inventory ask us to take a hard look at our character defects, and this can create a powerful sense of our need for God. Moral inventory shapes our understanding of ourselves, which in turn shapes our relationship with God. ![]() His hallmark was introducing syncopated accents on the bass drum while beating out a propulsive cymbal beat to maintain a swing groove. We've got an inventor named Harry Burnett Reese to thank for our collective obsession with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and other chocolate and peanut butter treats! In order be able to provide for his 16 (!) children, Reese really needed to come up with the invention of a lifetime. And clearly, he did just that! After (many) years of working in the dairy industry, then as an employee at Hershey, he eventually decided to start his own company, The HB Reese Candy Company, which sold all sorts of candies and chocolates. But it wasn't until 1928 that his American dream really came true, when he developed the very first Peanut Butter Cups, which he sold for just a penny apiece. At the time, chocolate was still a luxury. But mixing it with a less expensive product like peanut butter brought it within reach of many more households, and its popularity soon took off! And the rest, my dears, is history. In 1963, shortly after the tragic death of its founder, Harry Burnett Reese, Reese's was acquired by The Hershey Company. Chocolate and peanut butter, a match made in heaven Though for years Reese's was America's best kept secret, Hershey is now helping the brand make a name for itself on the international stage. Inimitable and impossible to resist, Reese's is now well-known by chocolate lovers around the globe. And we definitely eat our fair share of Reese's here at My American Market, that's for sure! Reese's are so incredibly popular among the entire Dream Team that it would be impossible to say who loves them the most. Well, maybe not poor Sylvia, who's allergic to peanuts. Sylvia, if you're reading this-don't hate me, but you're really missing out □ Don't feel too bad for her, though, she makes up for a lack of Reese's with plenty of other American sweet snacks, trust me! Today, the number of different Reese's creations that have existed over the years is somewhere in the hundreds. There are the classics, of course, like Big Cups and Reese's Pieces, but also tons of different seasonal goodies, like Reese's Easter Eggs and adorable chocolate-peanut buttery ghosts and pumpkins for Halloween. Reese's also offers lots of fun and colorful Christmas-themed treats. The brand has even launched its own line of peanut butter spreads, sauces, and toppings.
